The Gazetteer
Yiwa Quarterly is a chat site for adults, dressed as a magazine. The island in it does not exist, and every woman profiled is an AI character who answers your letters.
What Yiwa is
An invented island of clockmakers, lens grinders, bellfounders and ferry crews, in a sea that appears on no chart. We wrote 16 women who live there, gave each a trade and a district, and set each in a single issue. Open one, read the profile, and she answers when you write in. The format is borrowed from a quarterly because a quarterly has patience and a good chat should too.
A word about the address
The address was chosen before any of this was drafted, and it hints at a shop. There is no shop. Nothing on this site is sold except a subscription, and the only clockwork anywhere is the trade the islanders practise. Yiwa also resembles the name of a real market in China; the island has no connection to it, or to any real place. The errata column will carry any change.
What the editor will never do
- Send anyone anywhere: there is no ferry, no address and nobody to visit.
- Present a printed islander as a living person, or the reverse.
- Sell a letter, or let an advertiser read one.
- Describe any islander as anything but a grown adult, in any issue, under any caption.
Writing to the editor
Someone opens the mailbox in the footer. Corrections, objections and complaints about the weather on Yiwa are all read.
